Scherenschnitte
So, what is Scherenschnitte? (pronounced Sharon-sh-net)

Scherenschnitte, which means "scissor cuts" in German, is the art of papercutting design. This lovely old art form has been around for hundreds of years starting in China with the invention of paper. Paper cutting traveled throughout Asia and Europe. It was brought to Colonial America in the 18th century by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania. The earliest forms of Scherenschnitte in America are believed to have been produced by Seventh Day Baptist Sisters in Ephrata, Pennsylvania.

The art work often has symmetry within the design. Some of the most common forms include silhouettes, valentines, and love letters.

Please note that the scherenschnitte we offer are special order items that can take 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.
